Speaking of things that bug conservatives, the Internal Revenue Service has reversed a longstanding policy and given tax-exempt status to a homosexual activist group, the Fund for Human Dignity Inc., of New York.
The IRS ruling makes contributions to the fund deductible on the understanding the organization "will not advocate or actively seek to convince individuals that they should or should not be homosexuals" but will limit itself to disseminating information to the public "in order to foster an understanding and tolerance of homosexual individuals and their social problems."
The anti-gay forces see it as part of a dark plot by the Carter administration, hatched when presidential assistant Margaret Costanza met with a group of homosexual leaders at the White House last spring. Ms. Costanza says the tax-exemption issue did arise in that meeting which Jimmy Carter somehow did not manage to drop in on but that the gay activists already had
their application in the works at the IRS and specifically asked the White House to keep hands off.
